The moving truth: All the details on the Mayerling tragedy
The death of crown prince Rudolf and baroness Mary Vetsera remains one of the greatest mysteries of Austrian history. The case was never really closed, and new rumours about how the son of the emperor and his mistress lost their lives still emerge. Now there is a testimony that was dictated several weeks before the tragedy: the »memoir« of Mary’s mother, Helene Vetsera. On 148 pages, for the first time presented in the hand-written original and as a transcript, she clarifies that her daughter – in contradiction to what the imperial house have claimed – was not a perpetrator, but a victim. She reveals numerous details of the preceding events as well as Mary’s last letters: »I could not resist love.«
